like when it rains thousands and thousands seem to come out of nowhere and then when it stops they all dissapear. where do they go? is it under the soil? or some other hiding place?

at my old workplace there was snails hibernating attached to the fence and there was easily one hundred stuck to the underside of a large piece of wood

They hide in cover plants such as ivy and in shrubs that have foliage close to the ground, someplace dark and cool and moist.
