well theres no rainforests in south africa. maybe we need to determine what kind of habitat they have where they are originally from.

nice one... that'll helps a lot. So they probably hibernate in Winter and possibly aestivate or at least go dormant at the height of summer. It sounds like a drier environment is in order also, because although the humidity would be raised as you say, there doesn't sound enough vegetation to be really humid.
