Well I think we should be able to notice a difference even if there's only a tub of coir/soil in there.
If they go in it and it has something in it to help them that matting doesn't, then I would assume it would show.

Oh now I'm arsed off. I cant use capillary matting either. Why, you ask? Because the little sods have been eating it. And it had gone mouldy under the plant again - probably from being damp and next to the radiator...which is...erm...where they need to be. So I've had to use up the last of my sphagnum and swap them back onto that. I love 'em, but if they're not refusing food, they're refusing food and eating their home. Sheesh, kids nowadays... Obviously we dont know the exact identification of the suspects, we've narrowed it down to a shortlist (ie. those who live in there), and shall be consulting the management about installing CCTV....

PMSL - they are a bit dim, well mine are anyway! Opened up the hinged lid, knowing that Monty was hanging from it. What I didn't expect was to find Sally hanging from him! Do you think they think they're bats? ;D
