Emma would have been made a moderator by Paul. You could have posted once and be a moderator if Paul said so. Everyone else is just members and the god etc is down to how many messages you have posted. Nat

Staff members are exempt from those ratings Sophie, when you asked me about moderation there wasn't anything to do, and to be honest there isn't a great deal a moderator can do. But in view of how the board has been split regarding snail posts and chat, I felt the need to create a new moderator to help me keep things cleaned up. There's a number of excellent reasons why I chose Emma. Firstly, she's moderated on snails2die4 and I know she's done a great job. More importantly though, she is extremely interested in the exact thing she moderates. Check her posts, you'll not find many that aren't focussed on snails or furthering debate and information. She has a huge appetite for snail info like me and I think her posts in these areas are particularly constructive. The thing is, I can't have a board with 60 moderators and I don't want people to feel like I favour people. There are many great contributions to the board from everybody. Emma just fitted the bill this time because I know, like me, she'll want to preserve the info in the right way and make sure it is organised and uncluttered. We talked about it, she had the same concerns as me so it was the right thing to do this time. Like I said earlier, being a moderator is no great thing, it is just more work. I'm not sure why you would want to be really, depending on what it is you need to do it can be a laborious task. It doesn't make you special or anything, lol. If a need arises to make someone a moderator I'll pick the person I feel most suits the task in terms of me being impressed by their knowledge or inquisitiveness in that particular area. It's as simple as that. If a role crops up that I think would suit you best, you'll get your chance. If you can think of a new section you feel you could moderate well, let me know. If you really wish to make contributions being a moderator is only one way that helps the forum run smooth and be kept organised. There are countless ways you can really take an active part. As I've said before, I want the website to be a really good resource, there are so many areas that need pursuing that we need people taking on jobs. So why not pick one and really get stuck into it. Take James' snail map, it's on the site now - I nearly snapped his hand off for it. If you can research things and/or write an article or just help me research things by contacting people etc it would be great. This is why the snail society could really help. It'd be wonderful if we are all representatives of it. I can write a contact system. If we need to contact the Natural History Museum, well, anyone of us can contact them on the society's behalf and the replies will be logged centrally for us all to read. The avenues that alone would open up for us is immense. We all have limited time, imagine if one of us was easily able to follow up on a reply or make a call because all previous correspondence was viewable by us all. We'd really make short work of things between us. Have a really good look around on the website, and read all the society and job list posts on here. There are still massive chunks missing, help me write it. I'll do the computer fuckery-foo, you help me compile the information. Take the species section, I did a page on tigers which is really aimed to set the standard for the other species. But so far, I've got quite a bit for fulica and a little for marginata. And the species list is tiny. Help me start compiling info and pictures on the more exotic species. Find me good shell pictures for species I have missed off. All the people who are into slugs, look at my page layout and see if you can knock up something similar for slug species. Don't worry about making the pages, I'll do that or help if you wish to have a go. If you see something that is out of date (in light of discussions on here) or wrong or needs rewording, do it and let me know. Then all I have to do it a little cut-and-paste. My website is like an A4 lined pad, with the first few pages filled in. Let's all get cracking, and in doing that you'll be contributing immensely.

The mutant snail is fascinating btw! I think someone asked about gene mutation, it will be errors in early cell division caused genetically. Has anyone ever read "The Blind Watchmaker" by Richard Dawkins? There is a great demonstration of mutation and evolution.

I've read that snails can regrow their eye stalks and feelers if lost, maybe this snail lost part of its eye and it just regrew in two in stead of one. Anyone who has a Yukka plant will know what I'm talking about.

Unlikely, unless somehow the cells mutated at that point.
Just as a point of interest the reason plants divide is due to plant hormones. Take a plant growing thin and tall, the majority of hormones are located at the top. Cut it off and it means the hormones elsewhere are suddenly evenly distributed and bushier growth occurs.
