I have now had my two young fulicas for almost a week and I am really enjoying watching them. When they first arrived they made a squeak which I assumed to be a fear/stress reaction - poor little thing -dwindling to a little peep when disturbed after a few days and now stopped. I suppose they must feel safer now, they are certainly eating well!

A couple of years ago someone posted a recording of their snails making squeaking sounds at night. It was very peculiar, and he was never sure why they were doing it. And the Cantareus apertus snail I used to have would make a raspy squeak kind of noise when retracting quickly. I'm glad yours are feeling safer now and have stopped their squeaks.

I read somewhere that A. Marginata in the wild make a squealing sound when frightened there will be a lot of air to displace in that great big shell! My White Jades are arriving tomorrow - I hope they are ok and not too stressed out by their long journey.

My Jades arrived safely - one of them squeaked too - they are ok but I was shocked at how small they are. I assumed they would be about 4months old, considering how long the advert has been running, but these are tiny by comparison to my approx 4month normal fulicas. I'm going to have to be really careful when I'm cleaning out and changing food.

My snails make fart noises when going inside of shell. Rasping sound when rasping cuttle and they munch really loudly when eating. Climbing species make scratching noise when shell rubs againts wall that it's climbing. You can hear bang noise too if heavy snails drop down from sealing..
Edit snails might "meow" if they dig holes in substrate in plastic tanks.

That's amazing! I never thought snails would make so many sounds, people think they are boring, far from it!

I was moving my A. Fulica (Arthur's) tank one day and the piece of cork bark I have in there shifted and fell on top of him... when that happened he made a big girly scream! He's done it a few times if I've had to pick him up to clean out for example... I always assumed it was due to air being squeezed out of the shell when the snail retracts... A few of my others do it occasionally, but not as much as Arthur.
I love snails, they are not at all boring... I've been known to talk to mine quite a lot, and some of them you could almost imagine were paying attention too lol

I talk to mine too, I don't think they can hear but I'm sure they know you are there. The smallest of the tiny new ones is so shy she won't emerge or move when you are watching but disappears if you leave the room.

My pomacea bridgesii are like that... I feed them and watch to see if they come out, and the tank is completely motionless but turn your back for ten minutes and look back and they're ALL out sitting on the cucumber/lettuce/algae tablets munching away... I swear they can move faster than light when they want to!
