Sorry to be a pest and have a trillion questions! I picked up Mr Snail tonight to see how he was doing, and he had this wierd orange lump on him..... I did use the search button, and looked for snail poo, as I thought it might be this. I have noticed that people talk about the snail poo, but I have no idea what it looks like, and if this is snail poo its the first time I have seen any! But the search button wouldn't let me search for it, it said poo was too short a word? Anyway.... is this snail poo? If it is I am sorry to be posting photo's of poo! Also on the photo of Mr snail, can you see that white stuff? He has had this on him 2 times now, is this normal? I have got a cotton bud and dipped the end into warm water and gently taken it off of his body, I did the same with the orange thing. The white stuff when you get a hold of it, you have to twist the cotton bud to get it to come off, he doesn't retract when I do it, he doesn't seem to really notice it much? It is all over him, but mostly around the top where he comes out of the shell. Anyway, sorry to be a pain, just have a curious nature and want to know as much as I can! Thanks, Marie x

Looks like somebody has been eating carrots!
Yes, that is snail poo. You can always guess what they've been eating by the colour. Lots of cuttle result in white poo. And it's perfectly ok to post the piccy and ask! Someone with the same question in mind but not posting for some reason will also benefit!
The "anus" (dunno if it's called that in snails...) is near the pneumostoma, the breathing hole. Gastropods go through a kind of twisting of their insides at embryo stage, so all the body parts that are in the lower part of the body in most animals are actually near the head in gastropods.
Usually snails use their mouthparts to guide the poo beneath the foot from where it will be discarded as they continue moving. Sometimes they forget to do this though, and you can see poo hanging from their right side. It's ok to remove it then. I sometimes nab it with tweezers if the snail looks like it's not gonna do anything about it.

Thanks, Marie x Yes, as pinkunicorn has said, the orange stuff is nothing but snail poop It will generally be the same colour as whatever they've been eating, so it won't always be orange. He looks like a lovely big snail so I'm sorry to say he will probably be producing lots of poop! The white stuff on his body is just snail slime that's gathered. Nothing to worry about and you won't need to remove it for him. Just make sure the tank is kept humid, and provide a shallow water bowl if you can for him to bathe in, so that he can stay nice and moist!

Whatever your snail eats the poo will be the same colour as the food, bright orange after sweet potato for example, and white after eating calcium. It is sometimes quite firm but can be looser after pigging out on lettuce or cabbage. I had to look at a diagram of a snails internal organs because at first I didn't know where its anus was or where it laid eggs from. I don't think the sight of a bit of poo will worry anybody ha ha.

Haha thank you everyone!
I had a feeling it might be poo, then my worring kicked in and I thought "Oh my god, his insides are coming out!!!"
So pleased its poo (how wierd is it to say that??) and now I wont panic when he has a different coloured blob somewhere as I now know it will be poo as well!
Thanks everyone, for being patient and answering my silly questions! ;0)
And thanks about the white stuff, I shall stop trying to remove it and just met him be, bless him, he's been saved and probably thinks "what is this woman going to do with me next??"
He has a shallow bowl, and I mist him 2x a day, hope thats ok?
Thanks again, Marie x

Don't worry about silly questions - snails can be a bit hard to understand at first because there are lots of things that seem strange or different! If you don't ask questions then you won't learn. This forum is here to help out experienced owners and beginners alike, so you can ask away as much as you like
