I just saw a random video about snail caviar on youtube. It was in french so I didn't understand a lot of it. The thought of eating snail eggs never even crossed my mind.. but neither did eating fish eggs really! ..Maybe a new way of using unwanted eggs!? Although I don't think I could bring myself to eat my pet's babies!
Would any of you try this? Have any of you tried this? I don't plan on eating any of my snails eggs but I'm curious as to how they'd taste!
I wonder what species they'd use...

I've personally never tried this, like you it would never have occurred to me, but to be honest I don't fancy the thoughts of any caviar. Fish eggs are soft, and many snail eggs (though not all) have crunchy shells. Eew the crunch then squish is off-putting. But then i never fancied the thoughts of eating a grown-up snail either so be honest. Or clams, or cockles etc.... for that matter.

I think it's usually described as caviar of "escargot" which usually means helix aspersa. I guess that would make sense as they have the squishy eggs rather than ones with hard shells! It doesn't appeal to me personally but not because I'm against it - it just doesn't sound appetising. I've had salmon eggs on sushi (ikura nigiri) and didn't like it at all - the texture and taste were both unpleasant to me, but some people absolutely love it. Snail eggs certainly doesn't sound any tastier to me!

Fish roe mostly tastes like seawater. Snail eggs don't even have that flavour.
I'm someone who was raised to eat absolutely anything, and my "disgust" at strange foods is largely ethical so I'd have little problem eating them otherwise... but I can't grasp the attraction of snail eggs. It's not even economical, unlike bird eggs (birds take a lot of resources to grow into adults, unlike snails), so the reason they're eaten must be purely gastronomical curiosity and not tradition out of necessity like for most odd foods (despite being currently considered delicacies) eaten around the world.

I think the website said that they tasted woody with a hint of rosemary.. (!?) They don't look particularly appetising! I always think the bright red fish roe looks quite tasty, but I think that's just because of the colour. Snail eggs look a bit like they'd taste of plain watery jelly... ewh x] I would probably try it if it was offered to me but I couldn't just start munching on a heap that my snails had laid!
