I have a 'bug xl cage' which is made my Small Life Supplies and is actually for stick insects, however it is currently not in use and as it is still in good condition (and because I stupidly paid about £130 for it ) I dont want to just throw it out, and wouldnt get my money back if sold it on so would like to reuse it somehow. And I was wondering that if I layed it on its side, it might make a good tank for a couple of my snails! ;D However there is a problem... The door is kept shut by a lock, and I think a snail could easily open it from the inside by accident or push through the corners of the door and possibly get out... So I was wondering if there was anything I could do to secure the door a bit more or anything? heres a link so you can see a pic of a smaller version of the cage which they call a 'UBC insect cage': www.small-life.co.uk/page4.htmlas you can see, the lock is kinda pathetic and its not locked all way round like tubs, and am worried it wouldnt be safe enough, so any help would be appriciated!!! Thanks

Are the sides made from mesh? If so then I really think you'd be better with a glass tank. I agree it's a shame not to use it though...

no, I'm laying it on its side, so the front, back and sides will all be plastic. The only part being left as mesh will be the roof, and the mesh is so fine even hatchlings couldn't escape, so think it will be ok... Just the stupid door thats doing my head in! Thinking of ordering some velcro and trying to get it to over lap the corners of the door, so will help secure them..? other than that I'm lost for ideas haha!

It is hard to tell exactly what the insect cage looks like from the picture. If the only part that is mesh is the top I can't see a problem using Velcro as a lock. I actually used masking tape on an old tanks screen to keep my snails from escaping and that worked. I am just wondering if it is on it's side and therefore the door is on its side and when you open the door wouldn't the contents of the bottom of the tank tumble out? Unless you had some sort of barrier part way up. My first two tanks were actually those Beanie Buddy stuffed animal containers. I am sure you will work something out and be able to use it. Good Luck.

because my cage is bigger than the one in the picture, there is more area around the door, so there's no chance of the soil being tipped out I ordered some 2 inch wide white velcro to secure the corners, couldn't really think of any other way of doing it without it looking messy as I plan to use it as a display tank so want it to look neat.. I'm really hoping the velcro works!!

I think the velcro will work that stuf is pretty strong and sticky, use a hot glue gun to glue it on that glue is much stronger and of course dries faster. Hope to see some pictures when you have it all finished and set up.

Still waiting on the velcro to arrive so we can secure the door, and I wanna get some dangly plants to attach to the top of the tank to hang down the sides of the tank... But it's getting there! really think my partner did a good job with it, turned out much better than if i'd got my clumsy mitts on it haha Cant wait to have it finished! ;D Just hoping the worms don't find a way out! LOL!

Thanks! ;D Attached the velcro, it has made it a lot more secure! I've now got my 2 albino retics, 2 fulica, 2 rodatzi, 2 jadatzi, 2 jades, and 1 albopicta in there haha! Will be moving all the fulicas and the albopicta into a massive tub of their own once their big enough, and just have my 2 albino and 2 normal retics in it, but that wont be for a while yet as most of the fulica are less than 1 inch big at the mo.. Also planning on getting a couple of the stick-on vivarium plants to cover up the velcro a bit on each side of the door (really glad I went with white velcro, you hardly notice it! ;D) My tiger Tub at the bottom, the newly coverted tank, and on top is where my leopard slugs will live ;D
