Hi
I have tried everything to rid my tanks of little tiny white bugs I think may be mites and also tiny little flies. I managed to get rid of the mites in my nemoralis tank but have tiny little flies in there plus they are in my oxy tank as well. Also I still have tiny little white bugs in my c hortensis tank. Ive cleaned and sterilized and added window screening. would anyone else have any other suggestions? vallery

I had a mourning gecko who took care of this in one of my snailariums. They are escape artists, so the tank needs to be sealed in any way, and they are tree living, so they will mostly spend time in the top section of the tank. It won't work if the tank opens on top.

Hi tsrebel, Thank you. *Can you put the gecko right in the tanks with the snails? *They won't eat the snails? *Do you leave them in there always or just for a certain amount of time? Lots of questions I know, sorry about that. Did you see my other post in this section about some of my c hortensis shells fading or deteriorating? vallery

Yes, you can put the gecko right in with the snails. The geckos don't eat snails, only mites, small flies, fruit and gecko diet (and the snails love the diet too. It is a powder that you mix with water.) You can leave the gacko in there, if there is enough room and hight. My gecko was a little scared of the large snails (Achatina sp.) at first. A little warning; mourning geckos reproduce even when alone. Yes, I saw the post and responded.

No, I don't think so. None of my snails have reacted badly to the gecko's excretion

Thats a very interesting way to keep rid of mites and insects. Il have to try that I know a good pet shop that ocasionaly sells baby Tokays for £10 a peice. Id better check the internet first though, because these are a larger species of Gecko, so its posible these are snail eaters...

Hi Oscar , When you find out could you let me know. I am only having a problem in on of my tanks with flies. The other tank mites. The rest are fine. Do the little flies harm the snails? vallery

Hi Vallery, the flies will most likely be fruit flies or mijis (however its spelt) neither will harm your snails directly but the lavae of mijis can be consumed by snails giving them worms. not usualy a fatality upon your snails but can be if the numbers are large enough. if this does happen, giving your snails a pumpkin seed and sunflower seed mash will work as a natural de-wormer and help to flush them from the snails digestive system. Some snails wont touch this mash though so its not always a helpfull solution. I make this mash ocasionaly for my snails just as a precaution as they have never actualy had worms to this day and ocasionaly I make a little to much and throw some away on the back garden dirt and this is always swarming with Capaeas when I check back the next day. hope this helps

Thank You Oscar , I know they are definitely not fruit flies so they must be the other type so I will try the pumpkin and sunflower mash I am going to give the tank a thorough cleaning first. Thank You for your help. vallery

So I have thouroughly cleaned and sterilized all of my tanks due to flies in one and mites in another. I used sterilized gravel, earth/mulch and sticks by baking them in the oven. I removed the old plant pots and plants and put in new pots and new plants. I discarded some things such as shells and caves and feeding dishes and put in new ones. I gave my snails a luke warm bath put some fresh food in the tanks then lastly the snails. So now I am waiting to see what happens. I will give an update after a while as to how things go. vallery

Thanks for that bit of advice Do you know if it's only mourning geckos that will take care of the mites, or will other types of gecko also do the same thing?

Just to be safe, I'd put in mourning geckoes. I wouldn't risk other species due to the fact that they might eat the snails!
