I added three regular earthworms to my Deroceras tank today in the hopes they will eat some of the poo about 100 little slugs produce. Does anyone have experience about them in tanks? Is it reasonable to expect a visible difference? Do they breed a lot? How do you handle substrate changing with the worms in?

They do breed pretty fast. It would not be so reasonable to see a difference with only three worms in there. I would probably take them out for a while at least to breed them so that if any of them get lost in substrate changes, you have a worm farm you can rely on.

Thanks for commenting. I've pretty good quality compost in use now and I've been turning it over and adding a thin layer on top about once a week to try changing the whole lot less often. Also removing any fruit fly maggots I find (got an infestation in the house). I hope they breed before I need to do a full change so I can remove some for a separate farm. Good to know they breed well. I've a lot of poop that needs cleaning up. The babies especially poop into the soil where it's hard to remove.

Oh, btw, do you feed the worms anything beyond what you feed your snails and snail poop? Since the snail food is usually on top of the soil and people don't like it getting rotten and buried, I wonder how do the worms get their share. I see them pop their heads to the surface about once a day, but that's it.

I don't add anything extra for my worms, they seem to do fine and are breeding. At night time I believe they come to the surface to find little scraps of food. I don't have any problems with mixing up all the substrate when it gets a little dirty, I think it makes the soil better and it doesn't really smell.
