All the time, it's unbelievably annoying. It can get a bit hurtful too, if you express how you feel about those jokes and people feel the need to carry on anyway. I wish I could get it to stop!

I suggest making a joke about a roast dog/guineapig/rabbit/commenter's pet in return. To really drive the point in find a recipe to quote that uses the animal in question as main ingredient. The chances are somebody somewhere eats their pet, and pointing that out will hopefully make them think that one's dinner is another's pet and there's nothing wrong in acknowledging this, but joking about eating loved pets isn't usually appropriate. Or they will still not get it, but at least will be disgusted enough to shut up.

Or even worse, "I'd just pour salt on it"... "It" is a pet, and he has a name! Makes me sad, rather than angry.

For the salt comments, inform them that the snail has a (well-documented) central nervous system and pouring salt on it is the equivalent of pouring acid on a human, and that harboring sadistic and violent fantasies about inflicting pain and damage on other creatures for no acceptable reason, such as defending oneself from violence or death, is a phase that most children grow out of but psychopathic adults remain in. In children this phase happens before they become capable of empathy towards others, human or not, and they stop torturing little animals when they realise the pain they are causing. Even when it comes to killing animals for food most cultures try to do it while inflicting as little pain as possible.
Ask the salting-for-fun adult if they get pleasure from seeing a snail writhe in agony. Then refer them to see a mental health professional for their retentive sadistic tendencies.

on the side listings on youtube i saw a video titled snail and salt. i dint watch it as i knew it would upset me greatly. why would you want to?! its not entertaining and its not funny and completly agree with you pinkunicorn. this for me would be like seeing someone being tortured. and i also get many comments of off people who think its funny to say stuff like:what we having for lunch ,sandwich ,pasta, or your snail? i dont go around suggesting people should cook there hamsters or dogs.

I live in France, so I seem to be the butt of this sort of "humour" quite often. I usually get into a rather heated argument with the ignorant brute who thought it would be a harmless joke. That's my friend you're talking about, buddy! Haha. Thoughtless jerks.

I have had that mentioned a couple of times about my snails, or been told that someone has just picked them out the garden and sold them to me... Worse is my pet rabbits, the amount of times I'm told they would make a good stew/pie is horrifying

Most people just look at me like I've gone out of my mind when they find out I keep snails for pets, but a few have been tasteless enough to make a remark about how snails go good with butter They seem to think they've just made the cleverest joke. For some reason, though, I noticed its ONLY dog people who've ever cracked that particular joke. People who have cats, small animals or reptiles might not "get" keeping snails, but they seem to be more open to the idea. The dog owners seem to think their choice of pet is the only thing a reasonable person would keep

You can't teach a snail to play fetch and snail owners can't walk their pets on a lead, dress them in pretty collars or enter Crufts, maybe?
I have a lovely Staffordshire bull terrier that other dog owners turn their noises up at, mind you...

I hate that, people always have to mention eating them. I also have chinchillas, and they are always the butt of some joke about skinning them to make a pair of mittens or something. Completely horrifying.
