Hi there, I'm looking at buying something to use instead of garden soil which is full of bugs and mites and... worms, which I am deathly afraid of, haha. I've found this coconut fibre based potting mix and am wondering if it might be safe for slugs 'n snailies? I thought I might have seen it mentioned here, but can't quite remember.

It should be okay! You may want to find out if there are any fertilisers/salt in it, if you can. I use a brick very similar to that one and it was fine.

Can I just ask how you use it if you don't need it all at once? Do you saw/cut an end off, or do you make the whole lot up and put what's left over in a sealed container? Which would work best, would you say?

I ended up cutting it in half, which was a real pain in the butt! I think in future I'd definitely make it all up then store it, it really lasts ages.

My coir bricks have shot up in price from £5.50 for a 3 pack to £7.50. If there was a safe alternative, I would be very interested.

I get compost, but it's far from ideal. The stuff I've been using is full of twigs, sand, gravel, roots and goodness knows what else! The stuff I buy isn't cheap, either - the last stuff I got was the finest quality stuff, supposedly. I wish I could have taken it back!
I'm sure the coir block, if I could get hold of it, would be a huge improvement.
