I am wondering if someone can give me some incite on something that occurred with my oxychilus alliarus. I keep them in a round glass terrarium without a top on and they stay at the bottom and never crawl up the sides. In the warmer weather I was having a problem with flies so I placed a piece of screen over the top of their terrarium. Right away they started crawling to the top I even found one that had crawled out and died. So I took off the screen because of that and they stopped crawling to the top. I was wondering if anyone knows why this would occur. vallery

Whenever I have my tanks open to handle the snails the others will crawl up the sides as usual but never over and out the top. when they were younger they did this a couple of times though. Maybe they have learned that it is dry out there or that they will simply be put back in the tank if they do get out. When I close the tanks up again the snails will climb on the lid like yours did with the screen.

Hi shaydee , It is odd isn't it that they would do this. The colder weather has gotten rid of the flies so I don't have to have that piece of screen on but in summer I will have to figure it out as I have found maggots on their food from the flies going in. I was thinking could putting the screen on the top like that be causing less oxygen in the terrarium and they are trying to get to the top for more? Could that be at all possible? What do you think vallery

My oxys usually dig into the substrate. The adult I see hanging from the plastic lid quite often. He used to stay at the bottom exclusively. The babies only stay in the bottom. And I keep the lid on most of the time, there's not even air holes put in as I open the case a few times a day to give fresh air. They don't use that much oxygen.
These snails came from the gutter, basically, so maybe they are used to burrowing. The adult came from our old house's balcony, hidden between the stone tiles on the floor. One baby was born in captivity, another baby I found again from the new house's balcony, same place as the adult: between the stone tiles. Lots of baby slugs there, too, I'm trying to catch as many as I can to replenish my stock, hehe.
On another note, I found two batches of eggs, three eggs in each! Yay, mini oxys on the way!

I just don't get why mine started climbing when I placed the screen on. It's off now. so they have stopped. But once it is warm again I'll be having problems with flies. vallery

I bought a few metres of cheap organza and have used that as a netting over tanks. Seems to work. Just need to figure out a better attaching mechanism than the painter's tape I'm using now...
