One of my pet garden snails appears to be dying while trying to lay eggs. It was quite inactive, eating less, this past week. Then, a couple of days ago, burrowed into the earth & I noticed a thick white string of what looked like eggs, coming from the side of my snail. They are still there 2 days later. The snail is barely moving & the eggs are still attached to it. They are not single, just a thick lump, about half an inch long. I'm really sad as there doesn't seem to be anything I can do. Any advice would be welcome please.

I've never heard of anything like that before, I'm sorry to say.
I can tell you that aspersas and cepeas don't usually lay eggs in strings, if that helps...

Maybe its not eggs then. I just assumed it was, because it looks like it is coming from the part of the body where the eggs are laid from. Does anyone else have any idea what it could be?

I've noticed eggs can sometimes come out in strings despite not being intended to. Just found a string of slug eggs yesterday and these are supposed to be free eggs.
Try gently disturbing the snail and see how she reacts?

Sadly, my snail passed away this afternoon. I did try disturbing her this morning, she flinched slightly but not much reaction. She was a really big snail, so obviously quite old. I rescued her in the spring, when I found her with a large hole in her shell. It repaired well & she was doing fine until this last week. The string of eggs are still attached even now she has died. Would really like to know what caused this to happen as I have another rescued snail plus some young ones & don't want to lose anymore, the same way. Thank-you for the replies.

Could you perhaps take a picture of the snail and eggs? Maybe it will help someone else. I'm very sorry nothing could be done about her. RIP little snaily. I've had some losses recently so I know how it feels.

I tried to attach a photo, but apparently the file is too large & I'm not computer literate enough to know how to change it. Will keep the photo though & try to figure it out. Thank-you for trying to help.
