Hi, Have a look at the following pic: Anyone spot the strange baby... Well have a look at it, compared to a typical suturalis baby of same age and size: It really looks like a ventricosa baby. I have 2 ventricosa, one that is likely too small and is not sexually mature and 1 that is roughly the same size as my suturalis. There's been no other chances of crossbreeding. This means that it could be one of the following possibilities: It is simply a bizarre looking baby. The ventricosa we have (from Lucy) are actually margies and that baby happens to look like one parent more than the other or was laid (singly) by the ventricosa. The ventricosa and suturalis crossbred, producing a crossbred baby, laid by the suturalis. The small and immature ventricosa isn't and has somehow managed it with a snail much bigger. The ventricosa has self-fertilised. I admit it could be a single egg that got mixed in with a suturalis clutch, theoretically the eggs would look almost identical and it is possible because eggs sometimes get disturbed when you are looking for them. What do you reckon?

Hi Paul! I have 2 "ventricosas" from Lucy and 2 "Archachatina ?" I got from Britain last late Summer. Both species are now looking complete identical. Some of my bigger hatchlings from the dark-bodied margie ovums and "albino"-ovums are looking too identical to them and some of them have pink others have yellow columellas. I am now pretty sure that we have here several crossbreeds and we see with each new generation comming through the different species which are mixed (Hope you can figure out what I want to say...damn, why is my native language German.. It is so hard to do conversation with missing the right words....) Kind of weird is this alltogether.... Totally clueless here... I am getting in the next da a package from a girl in Germany with "Ventricosa". As soon as I have them, I will do several pics, from this new ones, Lucy-ones, the "strangers" and my own hatchlings. Kind regards, Gabi edit: Oh, and Kevin got me a magnifier and if ther is something I should look up on the snails, please tell me. ;-)

wow suturalis babies are gorgeous ;D the one on the right has a different shell texture. and the skin colour and texture is different. it looks a different species. looks exactly like the ventricosa baby i got from lucy. maybe it just got mixed in with the suturalis eggs...

The one on the right does look just like the 'ventricosa' babies i got from Lucy - I spotted him straight away in the first pic hehe. I can't wait to see what these ventris grow up like.

That's what I mean, if it got mixed in, I can't think how it was produced, there is only 1 sexually mature ventricosa (if that is what they are) in there. That's why I thought it may be crossbred.
But, I'm still not convinced they are ventricosa. Can someone with a confirmed ventricosa check the shell texture for me on the body whorl? Study of my suturalis and "ventricosa" is inconclusive. I can find traces of a cancellate weave on them both, although only on the underside of the "ventricosa" and not necessarily the body whorl.
Also, both have grabulated nepionic whorls and I need to know if real ventricosa also have this.

grabulated hahahahahaha thats the funniest word i've ever heard ;D
Paul I thought you had more than one of Lucy's ventricosa?
anyway maybe it did self-fertilise. you would expect a crossbreed to look more pink like a suturalis. Probably have to wait till it's older

granulated I meant. Whoops!
I have 2 ventricosa, but they were born months apart and one is much, much smaller than the other and as far as I know, isn't sexually mature.
eric2, I've sent you my address details. Nice one!

Sarah, I got them just by chance. The woman has thought she is keeping fulicas. She got the adult-ones at a petshop sold as fulicas.
