my 7year old son would like a giant land snail or two, we've read up on cage substrate feed and heat. we just need some good advice on a good type to start off with and if anyone sells and on here. we would like to start with young ones so we can watch them grow. thanks david

Achatina fulica (or 'giant african land snail') is commonly recommended for a 'first snail'. They're generally easy to take care of and easy to get. There are always exeptions, though; my A. fulica wants everything smashed, fresh and smelly, I have to wash his dishes every evening because of some mites, and he's letting his shell weaken while using the calcium for laying eggs . . . But somehow, that just adds up to his lovability :'3
The forum has a separate 'buying and selling' section I think, so check if anyone's selling them there. Many pet shops also have these, but you can never know what age they'll be.
--edit-- Seems like the forum doesn't have a selling-area afterall. How weird /:o

You might want to be careful about buying a snail that's too small... their shells can be very delicate as babies, especially around the base where you naturally pick them up, and it really is so easy to do unintentional damage I got my a. fulica's at a bit under 3cm, and probably wouldn't buy ones that tiny again. JMHO, though.
