When I last cleaned my tank out I added a section of a small cardboard box. Since then my two Achantinas have been more interested in eating the cardboard than they have the actual food ive been giving them! The past few days they have had mushroom, lettuce, cucumber, broccoli and fish flakes but they have barely touched it, preferring to munch on cardboard ( and producing cardboard poos as a result!)
Im assuming that there is something in the board that is lacking in their diets? If so should allow them to continue? Or is there reason to take it out of the tank? Has anyone else experienced this?

The high carbohydrate content of the cardboard may well be a factor. Have you tried offering them a similarly high-carb food like mashed potatoes, sweet corn or sweet potato?
The cardboard probably won't hurt them in the short term, but I wouldn't let them continue for too long, as it doesn't contain much in the way of nutrients. I'd imaging that cardboard is to them what sugar is to us humans.

You're welcome! Yes, these guys have a weakness for sweet corn. When I put it in my slugs' food dish, the tub becomes a party.

Are you talking about fresh corn on the cob? Do you cook it first?

I suppose you could give it to them on the cob and uncooked. I just gave them some thawed frozen kernels, which I believe come pre-cooked.

Are you talking about fresh corn on the cob? Do you cook it first? Many snails love corn on the cob - no need to cook it first, they will eat it raw. Babycorn is also great.

Thanks. I'll try that when it comes back in season. I've never given frozen veg because I'm worried that it may contain traces of salt.
