Hi morningcoffee , That is one sweet little guy ;D. Unfortunately there are no [glow=red,2,300]Helix aspersa[/glow] here in Toronto. I read that in British Columbia Canada there are 94 species of land snails. I think that is incredible. In Toronto hardly any. P.S. Are there many species where you live? vallery Apparently there are 141 species of land snail and slugs within the UK, although as I live in central London there's definitely far fewer near me! You seem to find Helix aspersa in just about any park or garden here in the city, especially when it's wet, but other snails are less common. We definitely have Cepaea, although I very rarely see any in London, and I have some Oxychilus alliarius living outside my house in dark damp spots along the wall and behind my plant pots. There is also a small community garden nearby that's absolutely packed full of Helix aspersa when it rains! My parents' house is in a more rural area (they have a large park and some woodland behind their house) and they have far more species of snails living locally. I've seen Helix aspersa, lots of Cepaea, Oxychilus species, Discus rotundatus, Cochlodina laminata, Trichia hispida, and lots of different slugs!

Hi morningcoffe , That is so incredible 141 land snails and slugs. That is great. Snail heaven . Here in T.O. I have only found 4 species. Hoping to find more in a near by large park. But I think the only different species there may be pond snails. But I would be great to find something different. It would be great if everyone could add wild baby snail photos as you have on this thread as well. vallery

Some only live in certain areas of the country or certain habitats. However if you go looking in woodland or countryside, chances are you will be able to see a few different species here I found this link about molluscs in Toronto which has a few snails and slugs. toronto-wildlife.com/Gastropods/gastropods.htmlThere is also a book from 1948 called "A zoogeographical study of the land snails of Ontario", but unfortunately it seems to be very hard to get hold of now, and I can't find a copy available online for you However it seems there is a copy at the Toronto public library! It can't be taken out, but you should be able to ask them for it and read it in the library, if you have a good enough day with illness etc. to be able to get there www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/detail.jsp?Entt=RDM1880830&R=1880830I wonder if you might be able to contact someone like the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to ask if they have any lists of molluscs that are native / introduced to Toronto or Ontario? They deal with things like livestock, animal imports etc. so I don't know if it's something they would have, but it might be worth a try!

And what a lovely name I love your picture of the Cepaea at the top of this page Vallery, so cute! I'm going to post a couple of pictures of my little baby iredaleis for you

Shaydee, it's freezing! I want to go snail hunting already! The weather also delays me from buying more snails ! And your snail babies are soo cute!! How old are they?? Vallery, is it not meant to be spring round about this time of year lol? I'm getting sick of the cold weather What am I saying, no such thing as spring or summer in Scotland. Just wind, rain and snow lol!

Glad you like my photos Shortie! I'm not 100% of the age of these snails as the parents usually give birth to them under the soil and they stay there for a little while, however I found them on Saturday or Sunday, I don't think they can be much more than 2 weeks old, but they look really big for babies, compared to the adults! Just replying to your message right now by the way, Vallery!
