Hi there, Ive been looking at some bigger tanks suitable for my GALS and i like the Exo Terra line of terrariums but i dont know if they are suitable. The steel mesh lid concerns me- will the snails just fall off it if they want to climb on it or will it dig into their foot? Also would it rust?

The snails can climb on the mesh roofs without problems, but yes they do rust in a humid environment. I found that a good way to prevent that was to wrap the entire lid in a large clear plastic bag (like a recycling sack) and tape it in place. You can then fit it back onto the top of the tank without any problems.

Hi pear I love the exoterra housing I have two of them, a 45x45x45and my big tank is the 45x90x45. I think they are very well made and look nice, the only thing is I have insulated the sides and the back with silver bubble wrap and also I have a piece of the bubble wrap on the top of the mesh I find this keeps the humidity up. My snails are all happy in them and you can keep the substrate deep so the bigger snails can bury themselves, hope this is of some use to you , snail baby ps the snails climb on the mesh with no problems

I have one exo terra and I really like the doors. Other terraria have sliding doors, and I wouldn't use them for snails. But the ventialtion is too much for snails, so I cover half of it (especially during winter, when indoor humidity is very low).

But how does the tank get ventilation if the mesh is covered? They have additional ventilation holes underneath the tank doors. Without the tank lid covered in some way, there's too much ventilation for the tank to stay properly humid.

I have a big tank similar to the exo terras, and dismantled the roof to remove the mesh. Put some perspex in and it really helps the humidity. Maybe you could look into that if the mesh turns out to be too much ventilation

Sorry to hijack your thread but I'm looking to buy a new terrarium. Do you find any specific brand or model better? Do you use glass or plastic terrariums? thanks
