Snail are so cute when they are mating they keep "kissing" and keep very close together for a long time.

I think its something in the air as a lot of the snails here have the same thing on there mind, this morning I woke at 5 am to look in the Arianta's tank and find 4 pairs in a big pile all busy at it with love darts everywhere lol. by 8am they were all separate and sleeping it off.
The grove snails are just as bad and the Asp's well there just laying eggs all the time every time I turn my back lol.
I have to say the baby snails sure are cute, but thankfully I've a lot of hedges and stone walls on the land here to release them safely into.
The Gals are thankfully a bit young still for breeding and the eldest ones have lost there mates so are taking a break from breeding whilst the younger ones grow up.

4 pairs in a big pile, love darts everywhere... Thanks for the mental image Zorst Lots of flirting, gentle eye stalk touching and kissing attempts going on in my terrarium too, and I find snails exhausted from egg laying next to clutches. I've missed the mating itself a few times now, it seems...too bad, it looks so sweet and passionate!

When I was cleaning up the other night, I set one snail partly on the shell of another to move him out of the way. Well, the snail on the bottom got rather excited at this and started waving his what-nots everywhere. The one on top was just oblivious.

your posts are too funny! so love is really in the air eheheh maybe we should find an appropriate soundtrack to put on the terrarium maybe some Barry White? I don't really understand the process on my snails because I can't really see any love dart but there is something really big transparent that emerges from the side of both snails and then they connect together? or is this the love dart but is transparent? it has a really strange format like oval shape but big comparing to the size of the snails? I found this really interesting article about love darts love darts

That big transparent thing connecting them isn't the love dart, it's the love organ Love darts are thin, made out of calcium and snails fire them as contact shots during the "dancing" phase before the actual mating. Their aim is quite bad though, so lots of love darts end up not impaling the mate at the right spot, in which it stimulates him not to consume sperm in the digestive system. Funny that the old Greek mythology about Amor and his love darts might actually be inspired by snails! I wonder how many people would say "oh... Ew..." if they heard that. Haha.

Welcome Hmmmm, now I have a Cepaea and an Arianta stroking each other gently with their tentacles. Interesting, haha. Maybe it's a gesture of friendship in this case though. If not, afaik their mating rituals are too different for them to get further than that. Did you see the movie Microcosmos with its snail love scene? Search Youtube for "Snails of beauty", it's very very nice

I feel the same way they are really amazing creatures. I'm really sad that here in my country (Portugal) they are considered a Summer food and a delicacy. It's so sad to watch.
