I'm really sorry to hear about Freyja and Ben. You did everything you could for Freja and ultimately I think you did the right thing by her.

Muddydragon: i have red your sad story about Freyia maybe you already know but i thought; maybe she was suffering from gangrene. The smell of dead is very tipical for this. gangrene: localized death and decomposition of body tissue, resulting from either obstructed circulation or bacterial infection.
But gangrene or no gangrene: it ever will be the result of some other illness i quess.
In my snails case, there seemed to be decomposition of body tissue, but there was no strange smell at all. there are so many mysteries surrounding about snail diseases. So it is very important we discribe the symptoms and share the information. Maybe once we will find the connections between all the different stories and finally find out what causes may be. This site already contains a large amount of knowledge and that will only increase. That is a good thing and I would like to help by sharing my (bad) experiences

it is interesting that you had decomposing snail tissue with no smell that's quite odd in itself, typially decomposing snails (even those which died from old age) smell awful.
thanks for the sugestion on gangrene, but i cant really know.

It's very strange, but i know for sure it did't smell at all. Because when he started to loose the tissue, the first thing i thought was: gangrene (because i have a lot general knowledge about nature and medical subjects) so i kept smelling him, every day. Even the day he died, he did not smell at all.
But, the same for me: i also don't really know what happened.
