You may have seen in my photos in the picture section, I now have a new snail courtesy of Slinky (Archachatina Marginata suturalis) to go with my 7 month old Tiger snail Archie (Achatina achatina). The obvious difference is the new one (yet to be named) is albino, Archie is quite dark grey. The shells are very similar in shape and colouring. But the main difference is their behaviour. The Archachatina is very active, out every evening, eating loads, especially apple and tomatoes. It also sleeps attached to a branch half out of it's shell so it can hold on.
Archie on the other hand is a lazy beast. He stays buried for days at a time then emerges very late and spends ages rasping the cuttlefish bone. Although twice the size of the Archachatina, he doesn't eat nearly as much fruit and veg although is partial to apple. He then swiftly buries himself for another couple of days!
Very glad I got this new snail from slinky as they are both really for my daughter. Got Archie as I wanted to have "the biggest" thinking he would be the most interesting due to sheer scale when he fully grows, but we hardly see him and it often looked like an empty tank! This new snail has been a great addition as he is always visible and so much more active.
Not sure if it's the tomatoes, but Archachatina's poo is orange where I never really see Archie's as it is dark brown like the coir and he bulldozes everything so it gets mixed up.
Anyhow, 2 very different snails.
