Is my snail dead?

Hi,

As I am not yet able to post this under illnesses I thought this was the most relevant area.

I have recently been pet sitting my daughters giant snail. After a few days the snail had retracted and a white substance was formed just inside the shell. I cannot find any traces of the body in the tank but am very concerned as it doesn't look good.

Unfortunately this is what a dead snail looks like. It also looks like mold may have begun to grow on it. Does it smell bad? That's a very clear sign that its dead, as live snails will not have an offensive odor to them.
