other than egg laying - why do snails burrow im only asking as i have only ever had a thin (2-3cm) soil in the tank until i read they like to burrow & i put bit more in now there is 2 of them in the tank (so eggs likely) i now have about 3 INCH of soil in there (& tree bark) today for the first time i noticed the bigger of the snails (scooby - 4inch) burrowing pretty constant with shaggy by his side helping & eating in stages (he's 3.5inch) SO couldnt they be preparing for eggs OR is it that there is cuttle fish scrapings in the soil i just want to be prepared - they have been in the same tank from birth til Aug 20th & then i got them then they were seperate - i put them back together (they were lonely) on the 29th Sept SO.... what can they be doing & do i remove the eggs into another box OR leave them be (its right at the side of the food dish they are burrowing) THANKS

Hi,
which kind of snails do you have? I ask, because I made different experience with the eggs in the tank....for example the eggs of the puylaerti don't like to me moved, I let them in the soil, where they were layed by the snails. The eggs of my suturalis don't care, when they are moved, I can put them in an extra tub to breed them or I can leave them in the soil. It seems to me it always depends on the kind of snails.

I think fulicas aren't complicated, you could leave the eggs in the tank if you like, or you put them in an extra tub. My advice would be to put the little tub into the tank of the adult snails, because the climate in that tank is perfect.

i have 4 baby tigers that burrow all the time. i think they do it to create a micro climate (perfect temp and humidity) for themselves. this behaviour would prob protect them from potential predators in the wild too hth ;D

i have 4 baby tigers that burrow all the time. I'm glad to hear this, cause my 5 baby tigers also burrow all the time, and I was already asking myself, if everything's okay with them

And when I found them (they make an angry noise, when I take them out of the soil *lol*) I put them onto the food and.....they disappear again! I think they only like to eat when it's deep night and everybody's sleeping. Maybe they're shy guys and don't like to be watched while having diner.. But...my adult tigers never burrow!! So one day the little ones will also be seen, let's hope for the best

thanks guys not quite the same but i also have 20 baby garden snails & they are TINY WELL i have either LOST 2 of them now OR they are hidden in the soil so im NOT changing it for a while (taking all the food bits out etc) as im SURE i will throw one or 2 away - NOT that its a problem as the soil can go in the compost bin whats the best sub whatsit for the eggs once they hatch - my adults have a mix of compost & peat & also a small section of tree bark im thinking tree bark might make it easier to see the LO's when they hatch

its prob best to stick with soil so they can burrow more easily if they want to... babies are more sensitive to temp and humidity with being v small so will prob want to bury during the day when not active to create a more stable environment for themselves
