Hello, I've been having some bug problems in my 5.5 gallon tank. I use soil as substrate (no added fertilizers or pesticides) and because I hadn't changed it in a month and a half, I decided that was the problem and changed the soil three days ago. However, they still keep coming back! I don't leave food in there for over a day, all of my snails are alive and healthy, I also have a slug. Some I think are fruit flies, but some I think are super tiny fungus gnats. Help?

UPDATE: Okay, so I threw out the soil and replaced it with plain old dirt from home depot, which shouldn't be as welcoming to pests. At first I was going to use the same soil, but the flies were in there too! I poured the soil outside and now that I'm using dirt instead of the soil infested with tiny winged creatures, it seems everything is back to normal!

Sorry I don't have much advice for you. I deal with fruit fly and fungus gnat outbreaks often. Sundews kill off a number of them. Wormwood tea has killed nematodes in the past so I'm going to try soaking the soil in in again to try to kill the eggs/larvae.

That's a good idea! Hopefully another outbreak won't occur....

Ooh, I will have to try that tea, too... There's a crazy amount of nematodes in my one tank at the moment. It seems whenever you keep animals that like warm, moist conditions, it's a constant battle against pests and mold.

I've never ever had mold problems thankfully, but the bugs are throwing me off.
