I agree whole heartedly with this subject but then, as a person who is both new to this hobby and desperately wants a helix pomatia (Roman snail and my ancestors were Roman, it's something only I understand, lol) I'd have to argue against it as well. While I believe we should never just pluck anything from the wild due to upsetting the balance, there is a demand for these creatures (a non-escargot demand) that just can't be satisfied due to low numbers. I couldn't honestly tell you where to find any in the wild but if you can't seem to find them for sale anyways then what choice would a hobbyist have? If more people had them, then there would be no need for wild captures anyhow. Just thought I'd share my two cents!
