Hello, I'm very new to keeping snails and I recently bought a baby GALS, currently they're doing fine, growing fast and eating and such. I bought them a larger tank and in turn bought a bag of substrate called 'Spider life' which turned out to be of very poor quality, and probably not the best for snails. Today I went out and bought a big bag of topsoil (Shame they don't come in smaller bags..) which I assumed would work fine seeing as everywhere i've read suggests that somewhere. I have yet to come across coconut soil or coir (Read on a separate forum post)
Today I changed to the new soil- but I find that this topsoil absolutely REEKS. The scent could be compared to manure, honestly. But im dead certain that there are no added fertilisers or compost in this topsoil? My snail seems happy enough right now, there wasn't a mad dash for the side of the tank as there was with the 'spider life', But i'm worried that the scent may bother the snail or indicate that there's something bad in the soil? Not really sure if i'm just over thinking the situation... Thanks for reading!

To me it sounds like the soil has definitely had some natural fertilizer added to it, even if it wasn't labeled as such. I don't think that it would harm the snails if it is just manure (not positive on that, someone correct me if I am wrong), but I personally wouldn't want to deal with the smell. For my snails I use EcoEarth substrate, which comes in solid blocks and can be ordered online for a fairly cheap price.

I see, that's what I thought, I also read somewhere that bags of soil that have been left in the sun tend to smell really bad, I sniffed inside the tank this morning and the scent seems to have become less intense overnight; unless i've gone nose blind to it already. I'll take a look at EcoEarth c:
