Hi all, I was wonderful if someone could help. One of my snails, Shamby has had problems with his shell ever since I got him. He seems to be growing but the colour layers of his shell just peel off- leaving white spots all over his shell. His shell is very rough and his new growth is always uneven and he nibbles at his new growth quite a lot. I can't seem to get his shell to grow right. I give him all the calcium he needs, he has a varied diet and the tank is never too wet or dry. There's no parasites and the other snails aren't rasping his shell. Is there anything anyone could recommend?

He's so cute! Unfortunately, I don't know a ton about snail health, but I hope someone comes along soon who does! get well soon, Shamby!

A good polish with organic sesame oil should be good for his shell. It look like it's just ware and tear with the organic layer of the shell that provides its glossy look. My Rosy wolf snail Riceball is almost at 2 years and it's starting to do this. It just comes with age and especially if you got them from outside. Just polish Shamby's shell with a tiny bit of sesame oil and it should help him. It won't repair his shell, but it will help keep the organic layer healthy. Also add some more calcium to his diet if the white areas seem weak. I hope Shamby gets better soon!

Do you offer it protein regularly (mealworms, dog treats, etc.)?
If you do feed protein, then it could just be a genetic issue. Especially since it was like this from the start. Are the other snails growing normally?

Hi, yeah I do offer protein. My two other baby albino fulicas are growing well with no problems but my rodatzi (that I got from the same seller as my jadatzi) is struggling with the same shell problems and he is struggling to grow completely. My rodatzi is nearly half a year older than the albino jades but the jades seem to be getting bigger than him already! My rodatzi (Grayson) and my albino jade (Pedro):

My Rodatzi seems to have a similar issue but it doesn't seem to bother them. Giving them gentle baths seems to help their shells improve, or at least to look better.

Yeah their shell problems don't seem to bother them, however I'm a bit concerned that Grayson isn't growing

They're proper cuties i have a simulator problem with my rodatzi which I put down to genetics. I think many in the market atm are a bit inbred which might be causing shell issues and stunting, but with no real effects to their health Could Grayson have stopped growing completely? I had an albino that stopped growing at 7cm, perfectly healthy went on to Kay eggs etc, just a tiny thing? Hope your snailies stay healthy

I'm not sure, I think Grayson (my rodatzi) has stopped growing. He's never active for very long before getting tired and he doesn't eat at much as my albino jades (who eat tons! Lol). My jadatzi that I had in the past never had any problems so I'm wondering if its genetic?

Hi pearthesnail!
I also have a juvenile that stopped growing before sexual maturity. He's a garden snail and he is only about 1 cm in diameter, even though all the others reached adult size. I suppose it's genetic, as he receives exactly the same care as the others, however it's only a hypothesis, so I wonder too about the cause of this...

Hi Flowersnail, wow only 1cm? It seems it could be a genetic issue if the snail is eating fine and is active. Maybe some snails are just meant to be tiny

Yeah, I guess so... It is quite an advantage when under my care though, as it allows him to get a little extra attention!
