I'm new to snail keeping so I have no idea what to do. My friend says to leave the poop that is in the soil, should I? Idk what type of snails I have, the common English garden one? ?

Usually I just scoop out any obvious poops that are on the surface or on the tank walls, and that seems to keep them happy. You only really need to replace the soil if you start getting flies or other bugs in the tank.

Believe it or not, it is actually good for the snails if you leave the poop in. Some species babies feed on the excrement of older snails. I usually mix the soil with my hands on a daily basis (this also makes it easier to know when eggs are laid). Changing substrate weekly is a good idea, as not all pests are preventable or visible. On the other hand, anyone reading from this thread who uses a moss substrate (sphagnum or other) should remove any visible excrement from their enclosure as it can quickly go mouldy and "spoil/kill" the substrate when not mixed into soil/coir/compost.
