Today I went out in the garden to look for snail shells. (There's a place in our garden which used to be garden waste disposal, it's like a snail graveyard.)
Mainly because I was interested in which different species I could find. These are what I found:
Larger ones, I think all Cepaea nemoralis, Helix aspersa and Arianta arbustorum.
Tiny ones, the smallest are 4mm across. No clue about ID's except the small Cepaea.
I found one Helix aspersa which is 3cm across! I've never seen one this big in real life. Too bad it's dead..
Do they normally get this big or is this really exceptional?
Also I found this one which appears to be a different type from the ones I know.
It's "flatter" than any I've seen. Does anyone know what species this might be?
And I like this little one I found too, it is entirely see-through
Though it is nice to now have these pretty shells, I don't think I will do this again anytime soon. It was pretty gross to clean the shells. A few of them were recently deceased and had live parasitic worms/maggots in them and it smelled very very bad too. I used water and hot water to clean them. Any tips on how I can clean them better without ruining them?
The parasites were freaky ;-; I did wash my hands and tools properly after playing around with these shells. I very much hope my live snails will not be affected by any of this. I didn't touch them all day.
I also got a tiny live snail out of the search today. One I have yet to ID.
Not sure what I'll do with these shells. I may varnish them and make snails in them with polymer clay.
If anyone's interested in having any of them, feel free to message me. ^_^
