Don't read this unless you really, really want to, It's a bit distressing.
Sigh...
This is to do with my spanish snails that I got off ramonet, I now think I shouldn't have gotten them at all.
Firstly, as you may have read before I was having trouble with my Spintcherotila Candidissima and Xerosecta Explanata. They kept on going into hibernation so I gave them the heat mat on the side of their tank which warmed it up but one more went into hibernation. I found that it was the spahgnum moss that was coursing this; it was still cold 'cos it was damp, so I removed it.
Secondly, I thought well, they ain't coming out of hibernation (regarding the S. Candidissima) and they need to eat so I broke the seal on their shells and found that three of them were dead (I never want to smell that smell ever again ). I then tried the X. Explanata and 'smelt' that four of them were dead. I thought, right, I've still got some left that'll be okay, the dead ones must have died before I gave them the heat mat full time so everything will be alright...
I placed the snails that weren't dead next to the mat to wake them up, the next day 2 of the X. Explanata were asleep at the top of the tank and an S. Candidissima was at the opposite side of the tank. I thought great, it's working, they just need more time.
Two days later no other snail had moved so I decided to wake them up with some water in their shells which always works with my other snails. The water that filled up the shell (of the Candidissima) turned grey and had "that smell" in two of them which left me with two, one that moves a bit and one that has simply failed to be dead so far, not good. Same story with 2 more Explanata, leaving me with three of them, 2 active and one that isn't.
Finally, as if that isn't enough, one of my Eobania Vermiculata was found the other evening upside down with his shell filled with foam, dead. I have no explanation of this, he was healthy and active before. The only thing I can think of is that he fell off the roof of his tub and was scared into producing that foam stuff and drowned in it, but that is pretty unlikely.
When I got them I had:
1 Otala punctata
4 Eobania vermiculata
6 Pseudotachea splendida
6 Rumina decollata
7 Spintcherotila candidissima
9 Xerosecta explanata
Now I have:
1 Otala punctata
2 Eobania vermiculata
6 Pseudotachea splendida
6 Rumina decollata
2 Spintcherotila candidissima
3 Xerosecta explanata
Like I said, the worst week of my life.
Sigh...
