Hello, I have 1 helix aspersa (I need to get him some friends). I got him this spring/early summer, and he is doing great! I was wondering if his habitat needs to come in during the winter? his habitat is currently outside because it’s warm out (and he’s doing great outside), but it gets pretty cold in the winter and I was wondering if he would need to come inside. There are helix aspersa wild in the neighbor’s garden and they seem to survive somehow, but I wasn’t sure how he would do. Do they just hibernate?

They aestivate, which is similar to hibernation, until the conditions are better suited to them. So outside would probably be fine, or inside if you want to see your snail active through the winter months.

Yea, I would love to bring him inside, my family is just convinced that he’s a slimy gross thing that’s gonna end up escaping into my bedroom and sliming my blankets. I tried to convince them that he does not stink, I have a secure lid and he’s to lazy to even try escape anyways, but they don’t believe me... sigh.

They are unlikely to escape and crawl around your room because if they have a secure cage, they can't and they know there's no food out there and will mostly likely stick around outside the container anyway.

My family definitely thought they were just fun garden creatures that you play with and leave outside until I returned from university with some as actual pets in a tank. They were definitely not thrilled when I sat down on the couch with a snail eating a carrot in my hand.... I guess they came around when they noticed how curious the snail was with the flashing TV lights and that he never seemed to retract into his shell.
