I have what I believe to be a rat killing my outdoor snails. I am heartbroken finding all these mangled shells and need a solution before I can figure out what kind of rat poison to get and I read peppermint repels them so I got some peppermint extract and put it in sachet bags hanging around the yard BUT I read (after I did it) that peppermint also is bad for snails. Does anyone know??

Rat poison will certainly kill the snails, but peppermint won't. I've tried to feed my snails peppermint before, they didn't care one bit but they're still alive and well.

Snails won’t eat peppermint because they usually have a pretty good sense of what they should and should not eat so they won’t be harmed by it, but direct contacts with peppermint oil would hurt them I would think. It opens up the pours on human skin which gives you that hot/cold feeling, so I would think it would hurt snails sensative bodies.
