Winter is here... it’s been almost a month since I’ve seen any of my snails adorable faces. even though they are only sleeping somewhere in the leaves, I miss them.

I can understand you well, i miss them whenever they sleep for more than one day! but I have a question, which temperature are you keeping your snail in these winter days? is the tank outside? how are the temperatures? Im very interested as mine should go to sleep too, and i want them to go but i dont want them to suffer since they are not used to much cold, as it's their first real winter! im thinking abt buying them a greenhouse to put in the balcony, so they would have winter temperatures but not too cold!

Yes I do have it outside. I’m in the northwest side of the USA so it’s fairly cold. We get about a foot of snow every year.

Is it an above ground terrarium? where is it located outside? You may want to put it in a garage or bring them into the basement since the soil layer in the terrarium can freeze. In the wild they can bury down into the earth, below the frost line, but in above ground terrariums the soil layer is more exposed to the weather and can make them experience temperatures much colder than they would during a natural hibernation. It would not be unusual for the soil to completely freeze solid in an outdoor terrarium in temperate regions far north.

It is currently above ground, and yes, I’ve realized that and am working to fix that, luckily our coldest weather hasn’t hit yet. We are in Oregon, so it’s not as cold has Idaho or northern Washington, but fairly cold.
I’m thinking I’m gonna put their terrarium in the worm box and half burry it.

My Faitila (Cornu aspersum) is born outdoor or in a greenhouse Im not sure, I found her in an artichoke from the supermarket in February, she was a baby so I kept her inside and after one month and a half she hibernated even she was inside house and slept for 2 months! During last may I put her outside and from then she followed the outside weather... We had some cooler days couple of weeks ago and I noticed that she was around searching for shelters and warm, so I put her inside but with similar temperatures, just sligthly warmer... In your experience do they hibernate with temperatures from 10° to 5° celsius degrees (50.0 to 41.0 fahrenheit)?? real winter here is expected in a couple of weeks, so im planning abt buying them a "mobile greenhouse" in order to let them stay out without worries.... Do they sleep for the whole winter usually?

Ok nice! so they still can recover even without a complete long hibernation.. I'll just wait then, temperatures are lowering to real winter these days, up to now all my snails are still awake so should be normal
