My snail kiwi hasn’t been eating and she’s lost some weight. I’ve been trying my best to keep her in good living conditions. I’m super confused on what could be wrong with her. Kiwi won’t eat and if she does it’s only the very center part of a cucumber. Nothing else. She has never really been a picky eater so this was the first issue I noticed. She is keeping in her shell unless I hold her. She won’t even come out to eat when she’s in her enclosure. I have to hold the food for her to even attempt to eat it. When she tries to bite down on harder foods like carrots she doesn’t even make a small mark on it. She’s also very lethargic. I have other snails that are living with her and they are acting completely normal. When she is out of her shell her eyes arent extended the same amount they are usually. I know she isn’t going into hibernation because she opens up right away without a warm water bath. I’ve tried almost everything to try and get her to gain some weight. I’m scared if she doesn’t gain weight soon that she’ll start suffering from deep retraction. She doesn’t seem to be pooping a lot either. This is my first time owning snails and I’m super unsure about everything. I’m keep up on the humidity and the moister in their enclosure. My snails also get calcium and a variety of food.

What type of snail and how old is she? Sometimes when snails get old they will have a harder time chewing stuff and pick out softer foods.

I would give her a nice warm bath and put her in a smaller enclosure with lots of food and calcium. You want her to get food or I could be and. I hope things get better! ☺️

I have given her all of those things. She’s a Helix pomatia. I have no clue her age. As far as I know she is younger. About 5 months.

Oh, just do green tea baths regularly I guess. If she’s in a smaller enclosure with food then I assume that’s all you can do at the moment. Hope she gets better!

Thank you so much! I’ve been doing green tea baths, nothing is really changing how she’s feeling. She’s been like this for about 2 weeks and I don’t know what else to do! I was hoping someone could at least figure out what is wrong with her maybe give me some ideas so I can research how to help!

Ok no problem! Is there any poop in the tank? Is she sealed up a lot, or sleeping a lot?

She’s sleeping a lot and she only poops when I hold he cause that’s the only time she’s open.

Oh I see. I wish there was a way you could make her eat the food. The best thing you can do is the green tea baths I guess, like you said you were doing. Hopefully she comes around and starts eating. Just do what you have been doing and give her lots of food, hopefully this helps. I have had to deal with this type of thing before but I’m no expert, lol.

Thank you so much for the help! I noticed that my other small snail is suffering from deep retraction. I think their illnesses are genetic since I bought them from the same woman. I should have expected it though because she breeds snails is mass quantities for educational purposes

I as wondering if my snail is in pain. Does it hurt my snail if it is suffering from deep retraction? I don’t want it to suffer at all.

No problem! Sorry I didn’t see this sooner. I don’t know for sure if snails suffer but, people say because their nervous system is so simple they do not have the ability to process emotion. I am unsure on this so I don’t know if they feel pain.

My snail’s foot is no longer able to attach the side of her small enclosure. She started eating a slight bit, but not a enough to do any good. Right now she is just laying on the substrate without her foot even touching the ground. I checked to see if she passed, but she responded to me touching her. She curled right back in her shell once I closed her tank.

Hmmm ok. How often are you doing green tea baths? And what did she eat?

I’m doing them once a day. And she only at the center part of a cucumber. I’m really worried about her cause she is still in the same position as she was when I last posted.

Oh, i see. Give her something like peas or carrots if you have them. Snails love cucumber but it doesn’t have a lot of nutrients. Keep doing what your doing and hopefully she gets better. If you tend to her everyday I think that’s all you can do sadly. I will pray for her.

Thank you so much! I’ve tried giving her carrots. But she is refusing them. I’ve even mushed some up so that it would be easier for her to chew. No luck sadly. I held her in my hand earlier just to see if she would come out and she was only was out for a couple seconds before going back in her shell. But not fully up. Her foot is oddly hanging out. I’m afraid that she’s just getting worse and I have no clue even how to begin evaluating the rest of the situation.

How is she doing today? Also, in the past did she always have calcium?

She’s been given calcium since I got her. She is still acting the same way. She is having trouble carrying her shell with her I notice often I have to help her push it along with her

I’m glad she got calcium her whole life, it must be a genetics things possibly. Sounds like she is in mid-term. I hope things don’t get worse for her. Snails can live with deep retraction but die sooner. Be on the lookout for anything like, even deeper retraction, hard to wake up even with a lot of stimuli, takes more and more time to stir and immediately retracts again. Those things could be bad so be on the look out.
