Hello! My friends snail (helix aspersa) has mites. I’m trying to help her out with getting rid of them. She says she thinks they are yellow and predatory mites. I went to her house and they don’t look like them at all. So my question is so predatory mites even get on snails? Like do they even have a reason too, and if there on there wouldn’t there only be one? There were a lot of mites on her snail that’s why I think they are not predatory.

Predatory mites do not live on snails. Like the name implies, they are predatory and actually hunt other mites. What the snail has is bloodsucking mites. Use the search function to find threads on how to help her remove them. I don't know much about this.. I may find some threads for you later on. Some tips I have would be to remove all substrate and clean the tank with a mild detergent, making sure to rinse EXTRA WELL. LEAVE NO TRACES OF SOAP. Wash any toys or hides thoroughly and replace any moss completely. A total substrate change isn't healthy to do often, but needs to be done in bad cases of mites. You can also purchase real predatory mites, which will eat the bloodsucking mites before dying off themselves. edit; Typo

Ok thanks! I went to her house and helped her with all that. She kept saying she thinks predatory mites are on her snails, but I did not think so because why would they and there were a lot. So that’s why I asked if predatory mites even got on snails. She is not answering her messages so idk how her snail is but, she may get predatory mites.

This is a helpful(but also slightly distressing) video showing a close up of what the dangerous bloodsucking mites look like - www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-cd7GG2mEMIf this is what your friends snails have, then yes it will eventually kill them. Snerdahmik's suggestion of doing a thorough cleaning and substrate change is a good one. However, the bloodsucking mites can live inside a snail's breathing hole, so it may not get rid of them all. This is why predatory mites are usually recommended, they can go into the breathing hole and hunt down the bloodsuckers without harming the snail. I once rescued a snail that was in a bad way, and it turned out to have these. I bought the predatory Hypoapsis mites to kill them. It took a few rounds, but eventually the snail perked up and I haven't seen the mites on him in months.

Ok thank you! I have already seen this video, but it’s good to know these things even though it’s sad. She still hasn’t answered me so idk how her snail is.
