Not to be that person, but I could use some help verifying if my garden snail, Hugo, has died.
For the past 6 or so months he was less and less interested in food, and would sleep for weeks at a time before he would finally awaken for food. No mold, no parasites, no nothing. I had a feeling his time was coming but I want to make sure.
His current hibernation was about a month and a half. My health has hit a snag so I hadnt checked on him. I just assumed he was still hibernating and I was waiting for him to wake up. There was no tell-tale smell signifying that he had died.
Today I found another garden snail stranded in my apartment campus' duck pond. I was so excited to give Hugo a friend. When I picked up his shell though it very light and I noticed that I couldnt see anything inside his shell. When I shined a light through his shell's entrance it was hollow except for the center of the shell's spiral. Still no general smell but if I put the shell directly next to my nose theres a bitter acrid smell.
I knew this was coming but I'm more upset that I wasnt there when he died. I just can't help but wonder maybe if I had just checked sooner, maybe if I had gone to the doctor sooner and gotten my health looked at I wouldve been more energetic, maybe he'd still be alive.
The new snail is currently making itself comfortable on the kitchen counter. Don't know what to name it. I suppose they can have Hugo's old tank if hes really gone.
