Hi,
Really struggling to understand what has gone wrong with my snail. A bit of background:
He's a WC Archachatina Marginata - snail size 150-160mm. I bought him from a reputable place in June this year, he is approx 2 years old.
In June/July he settled in fantastically, active - spending hours per night sliming around his tank and ate very healthy portions of mixed fruit/veggies and his cuttlefish. I have toppers from the place I purchased him from that go on the food for added protein/nutrition. He is on cocoir soil and the humidity is kept between 75-85%. He also has a thermostat and heat mat on the side of the tank so the temp doesn't drop below 22 deg C. He is in a glass tank with adequate ventilation.
I should add - I have a pet watch camera on him so I can review his activity/food eating etc in the morning that happens overnight, so I know about his behaviour with certainty.
He laid eggs in late June and was slightly inactive for the days around this, but returned to normal afterwards (eggs removed).
Then suddenly, something changed. He stopped eating. It's been 5 weeks since he last ate veggies/food and over the course of the first week, his activity dropped too.
He is burying himself in the substrate and moving around a little under there through the day, sometimes has a look around at night, but is not unburying himself unless we get him up. When we get him up he will often eat some cuttlefish then just rebury. He's only had small amounts of cuttle fish, and only when we've got him up and put it in front of him for 5 weeks now. The only exception is that he has some dried treats and has eaten those when offered but they are supposed to be 1/week max.
Please can anybody help? I am really worried about him and devastated that he's taken this strange turn. I contacted the place I purchased him from and they said just leave him and he should come round but I tried that and for 4 days he remained buried under the soil not moving. He's not got any shell damage or injured himself. Nothing has changed in the environment - the only difference is that originally I was changing him out bi-weekly and then somebody said you should not do this as it removes healthy bacteria so now I am just spot cleaning it (he is still pooing sporadically)
He looks normal, nothing looks different and when he is awake he is looking around with storks up etc. Just completely disinterested in food and no longer sliming on the tank walls/ceiling, and burying himself endlessly.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Sophie.
