10 nights ago i stepped on a garden snail’s shell and brought it in to recover. The crack was not major thankfully , and i have her in a small plastic Tupperware with about 20 small holes on the top for ventilation and to keep humidy high. I’m using no substrate. The appetite was low but she pooped 5 times so far (I’m feeding carrots , kale, sweet potato , mushrooms , apple ,and lately old orchid leaves). I have not noticed her eating , however she must be having some. I spray with fresh quality water 2-4 times every 24 hours. I have cuttlebone there but she hasn’t gone near them.
My main question is this - As of now the shell seems to be healing well. I want to re release the snail in my neighbors garden near where i had found her. I want to wait for a rainy night after the rain falls , however next rainy day/night is not until another 2-3 days. It is October 11th and I am in New York. Temperature are averaging 60- 67 F during the day and 48-58 F at night next 3 days. 1 night before the rain it’s going to be warm 61 degrees. When it’s going to rain in 3 nights it will around 58 degrees at night ,and 48 degrees the night after that. Starting 2 nights after the rain the temperatures nights are going be consistently under 50 degrees , with days around 60 degrees for a week after
Should i wait for after the rainfall to re release her ? Or is it better to release in the middle of the rain? Or should i re release her on a night where it hasn’t rained (or right before the rain) since it’s been quite a while in the Tupperware. I want to make sure she can have enough time to hibernate properly and find other snail company before the winter starts. Thanks for your help !

These temperatures shouldn't be a problem and the snail should be OK whenever you release it. During or after rain is fine.

This snail looks healthy and will have enough time to prepare for the winter if released within the next few days.

Thank you ! I’m praying and thankful for her safety. She’s going to continue thriving.

I released the snail into the garden only a few feet from where I had found her at 3 AM. It was drizzling out for another hour following a 12 hour rain storm. The temperature was 53 degrees with strong winds of 26 mph. The snail stayed on the edge of the Tupperware lid for over 10 minutes before climbing off onto a leaf. I moved the lid around to different areas , however she stayed on. I’m assuming she was not used to the cooler air or wind , and felt protected on the lid and by my scent. I said many protection prayers for the snail. I also assumed she was figuring out what direction to go. I placed her near a group of small leaves she could hide under. She went off the lid very slowly , climbing around the edge of the lid til she climbed off. She went facing a sideways direction along side the sidewalk. Thankfully she’s doing great , she’s thriving, and she’s protected.
Thanks for your support
