Hi all. =) I recently bought Finch Farms Liquid Calcium. I want to use it with my little helix aspersa (my son brought one large one and two babies home from school) babies. I have spoken with a few snail people that use it in their aquariums and love it but I am worried about using it for my little land guys. Does anyone know anything about this brand? The only thing it says on the label is Ca + Mg - however it talks about adding baking soda to it on the back of the bottle. Since we are not putting this in an aquarium, must we really add baking soda? I am guessing that is to control alkalinity.
Thanks!

In "Field guide to the slugs and snails of eastern South Africa" by Dai Herbert and Dick Kilburn it says:
...this should be in the form of pure calcium carbonate (which snails utilise more efficiently than calcium phosphate). Dolomite is unsuitable as a source of the mineral because it also contains magnesium, which interferes with calcium absorption. If a commerical feed is used, the magnesium content should be taken into account, so as to ensure that sufficient calcium is added to negate its effects. However, be aware that too much lime can lead to deposition of 'stones' in the tissues!

Probably a daft question, but as you mentioned lime what about this limestone flour? is this really safe to use then?

Yep. Stir it into every lot of peat substrate I use. Add it to biscuits dried meal and sprinkle it on food. Its just powdered limestome (calcium carbonate). Have been using it for 4 months now, no problems no overdosing.

I used to put a few drops of 'Kents' liquid calcium in a spray bottle and spray my snails with this, but I don't bother to do this now as I find that if they eat cuttlefish or crushed oyster shell then they seem to grow very nicely without it! Val
