I am curious, how many smithii can I comfortably put into a 33G tank (just over 3 feet long, 18" high and about 12" deep)?
Reason I am asking - I've seen a lot of rubbermaids being used for them (I am not fond of those bins though, and prefer using tanks, etc). Some seem small, with larger snails in it. I don't want to cramp them, but would like to have a full tank if that is possible.
Thanks in advance!

That really depends on the size of the snails, adults probably about 9-10. Which gives you plenty of room for fooddishes, decs etc.

We don't all use measurements the same way lol. Depth is the measurement from front to back/back to front but to some people that's the width, and height is obviously from bottom to top/top to bottom, but some people call -that- the depth. Also, some people call the length the width lol. Rarrrrrrr.

I would agree with Arno, probably about 9 adult snails. The tank would look big but the 18" height of it is deceptive. Even if the tank was 24" high it's still only 12" wide (or deep Sian ) which is the major problem with these narrow fishtanks. It works similar with keeping fish. It's the surface area that counts (lengthxwidth). The height of the tank is fairly irrelevant. Brian ;D

Tara's the one that called it deep to start with thankyou I just explained it all to Sarah lol. I normally use l x h x w Shows how the suppliers etc vary though, the majority of "standard" tanks here are 15" wide lol. (And just to be a pain, height matters quite a lot with fish if you're getting ones that swim at different levels ) That's why I bought a nice little snail tub along with the big ones though, it has a huge surface area it just isn't really that tall, but fits on the shelf lol. *Mumbles on more* Oh, and tubs are good lol. Is no way in hell I can clean a glass snail tank out!

what I meant was height doesn't increase the surface area so you can't keep more fish in a tank 18" high than you can in a tank 12" high. 15" wide? I am surprised at that as nearly every manufacturer makes there hoods a standard 12" wide which is why tanks are this width. But to be fair it's been about 5 years since I last kept fish so this could have changed but............I was in my local aquatic place and EVERY single tank he sold off the shelf was 12" wide and he said it was for the reason I just stated I agree about the tubs. They are lightweight and easy to clean. Height again isn't overly important it's the length x width that matters. Brian. ;D

Well considering they now make many more hexagonal, bow fronted and god knows how many other shaped tanks, the dimensions on the standards seem to be changing to try and keep up. And I've seen loads of hoods in many sizes lol. He must not have much of a "varied" selection if they're all 12" lol That's why I like the tubs, I can actually lift them lol. Is no way I could clean a glass tank out in my room (Yes I have fish but they don't need the same cleaning ) and there's no way it could be carried down and back up again every time lol. Sorry Tara, we spammed your thread lol. It's Brians fault, blame him

Lol! No problems Sian Yes, by deep I mean wide (front to back). Once my turtles go, then I will have another tank the same size. I also have 2 20G talls, 2 20G longs, about 10+ 10G, 1 5G, and a rubber made on wheels with a hinged lid that is about 4.5 to 5 feet long. I also have another rubbermaid that I just remembered. Very tall, holding books right now, lol. See, I used to own a pet store, a reptile pet store. So everything we used was a display tank/terrarium/enclosure, etc. It met the needs of the animal first, and then the asthetic needs of the purchaser. I just don't like keeping them in rubbermaids. I kept my trio of ball pythons in a stacking rubbermaid drawer thing. Hated it. Never got to look at the, and always nearly got tagged by them when it came time to feed/water/clean, etc. But that's just my personal prefference I have a huge file on the computer with all sorts of reptile setups, and plans for them. Hubby and I would like to open another shop, and include custom enclosures if possible. Hopefully in the spring I will be able to get the building manager to help me make some simple enclosures. If not I will have to comission a guy I know...but that will be about...oh....$200 each :/ Anyways, thanks for the info! I am expecting some more snailies soon (just not sure how many, what species, etc). Coming from the guy who gave me Reggie and Smokey Need to have enough enclosures ready, lol.
