Hello! I am a water-snail- addicted person from Germany. I do have 4 fish tanks with many apple snails (Yello, violet and pink), some other specimen and some large crayfish. More or less accidentially I became the owner of two Baby snails (Immaculatas). So I tried to learn about land snails - and got more and more fascinated with these lovely animals.
Greetings, Nimue

Welcome - Willkommen Nimue! I am not surprised to hear that you 'progressed' from water snails to land snails. Snails are just soo fascinating!

You have crayfish in same tank as applesnails?? Do the crayfish hurt the snails? Reason I ask is that I really really want to get apple snails, but we have a lobster/crayfish in the tank (my sons) and I've been waiting for it to die (ok ok begging it to) Cos I thought the lobster would kill the apple snails. Woooooooo please tell me I can buy apple snails without waiting for the killer lobster to go ;D Welcome to the forum btw Nat x

Hi again, and thank you very much for the nice welcome. Nat: Well, I think it depends on what kind of crayfish you have got in your tank... is it a Procambarus Clarki or some kind of Cherax or .. ? Also it would help to know the size of your tank (please, in cm or liters...). Some crayfish keepers deliberately feed snails to their animals and if, for example, a Clarki once finds out that applesnails are quite tasty, then there is no chance at all he ever stops killing them. But experiences are different: On the other hand I do have a pair of so-called-apple-snail-eaters, that is a pair of Clarkis in a 240-Liter tank. There are several Posthornschnecken (uups post horn snail sounds wrong..., have to get a better dictionary..) in this tank, several cichlids and some other fish - none of them gets molested. So a couple of months ago I put some small apple snails in ... no problem. In another tank I keep a Cherax apricot and she doesn' t care for the snails either. So my experiences are pretty good - and I do have too many apple snails. But I don't know what a Cherax lorentzi would do or other kinds of lobsters. Greetings, Nimue

Thanks for your reply. I don't actually know for definate what it is. It was sold as a 'blue lobster' but you know what shops can be like, a lot of them haven't got a clue..... This being the same shop that sold me a krib as community tank fish who later ate all of his tank mates That is the photo of him although his colour is actually much brighter blue than that. He is about 10cm tail to nose... The tank is a 2 foot one so... 60cmx30cmx30cm (LxWxH) Many thanks for your help ;D Nat x

Hi Nat! First of all Happy Birthday!!! 'cause it's your birthday today, isn't it??? So have fun and celebrate a lot! I had a look at the photo, but I am still not sure what kind of crayfish this could be. I suppose that it is only him in the tank, isn't it? So it can't be a Marmorkrebs (Procambarus spec.) as these spawn without needing a partner.Depending on how soft your water is, a Marmorkrebs shows a more bluish or a rather brownish color. I would suggest you have a closer look at the following list of crayfish and compare the fotos to your lobster. Scroll down and a look under "Krebse" www.wirbellose.de/arten.html If nothing looks familiar, you could post a question and some fotos at a very good crayfish forum: www.wirbellose.de. Don't be shy, they all understand English. But these people know a lot about crayfish and could give you better information about your little bugger than I could. If you find a crayfish in the list, and your are quite sure that this is the one, I translate the text, of course. Greetings, Birgit
