Destroy, my big shy agouti boy, died through the night. He was about 17 months old, and it's come as a huge shock. He's always been a very shy fella, so when he was quiet and stayed out of the way at handling time, it didn't set off any alarm bells, I just assumed he was a bit scared. He was one of my favourites, I know you're not supposed to have them - but he was so gentle, despite being petrified of people, he never bit anyone, just hid. Anyhoo, here's a couple of pics. As a baby Pics were rare as he usually hid in his castle.

aww sorry, do you think it could have been a heart attack or something, the same thing happened to one of my guinea-pihgs, except in the day, in the morning he was fine sqeaking away, couple of hours later went to check on him and he had gone, he was the first guinea i lost 2 years ago Destroy is beautiful though :-) shame he died at such an early age... I bet you have a bit of a rat graveyard going on in your garden :-) i have but with Mice, rabbits and guineas

We think, but it's only a guess - that he probably died from a mixture of myco and heat. His brother (Squeak - do you see why he was called Destroy?) has been a sniffler from the moment we got him, but myco doesn't always show external symptoms - it can mess up their heart and kidneys and all sorts. So it seems like the most likely answer. He'd lost a bit of weight after the cage was moved into my room, but that was stress, and he gained it all back (and more). He just seemed to fall asleep and die Contrary to the piccies, he hated being handled, not in a nippy way - he'd just wriggle and jump off you and run back into his cage. He trusted me after a while though, and I became really attached to him.

Thanks Arno You cant really tell from the piccie, but he was ginormous, one of my biggest rats. He was tiny when I got him from his breeder, like a mouse, but within the first few months he reached adult size. It's a shame he was so shy, because when he was brave and came out (and stayed out instead of leaping back in) he was a real cuddle monster. I'd best stop wittering on about him, I'll start booing again - I get way too attached to pets *blush*
