As people reading the bugnation forum might know, our christmas could have been a whole lot better. Simba became ill around 6pm last night and had to be rushed to the vets. He was bringing up "foam", couldn't stand properly and was whining in agony. They x-rayed and put a tube down him but couldn't see anything so mum and dad had to leave him there and the vet operated on him. He had a twisted gut (bloat, GDV) The vet said they usually twist about 180 degrees but Simbas had twisted much more. She managed to get it back the right way and it was a good pink colour when she did, she's also secured it so it shouldn't happen again. She phoned about 3/4 of an hour ago and he's made it through the night. He's even up and trying to barge out of the kennel lol. He's not out of the woods yet as he has a temperature, but everything crossed that'll go away soon. They were about to give him some water when the vet phoned and she said they'll try him with some food later. Come on Simba, get well so we can get you home, it's not right without your grumbling!

Oh no Sian, bless him - poor thing! Bloat's a horrible thing - more common in big dogs (especially deep chested one like greyhounds, Great Danes and yep, even GSDs) Glad he's on the mend, we'll be keeping our fingers crossed and thinking of him. Come on Simba - show your mum what a strong lad you are!

Yeah we've been googling and finding loads of info on it. Need to ask the vet about some of it as it's the same as always - 1 site says this another says that. Mum - hah! I'm not even mum to my own dog! lol. Mum is mum, dad is dad and he's also a god as Simba basically worships the ground he walks on lol Thanks for the thoughts

We phoned them a few hours ago and he's been drinking. His first lot came back up but it was obviously a shock to his system but the rest had gone down fine. He hadn't eaten but who'd want to after going through all that?
Forgot to ask about his temp but the vet didn't say anything so I assume it's gotten better or hasn't gotten any worse.
We're going to phone in the morning and see how he is. They don't want him to come home unless he's eating in case he doesn't eat with us. We're sure he would but it's up to the vet.

I am glad Simba is okay now, even not 100% yet. Sure he will bounce back to normal before you know it. Give him another day or so, I think he will eat. But if he does not eat in the hospital, you can still talk to the vet if Simba is stable enough, then you can tempt him to eat for you at home. You know some animals just insist they do not want to eat in the hospital. (Imagine the food in the hospital, it's always cr*p!!) Keep sending you and Simba the pos vibes. (When you are done with it, give the vibes back to me. Thank you! )

He's had a bit of a relapse. He's still got a temperature, it isn't really high apparently just a few degrees but obviously they want to get rid of it. He was also sick during the night and still hasn't eaten but as there's usually no stopping him I would think he just doesn't want to yet not that he's being fussy with their food - Sheba is the fussy one not him lol
He might have to go back on a drip and his heart rate has been high so they're keeping an eye on that too.
As much as we want to we're not going to visit him as it wont do him any good. Going to see him then leaving again is not something you can do with Simba (wouldn't be able to do it with Sheba either) it'll stress him out way too much.
We're hoping they'll let us drop some of his things over though. A toy and/or one of his beds and then something of dads. He's got nothing there that's his and he doesn't know where he is so hopefully some familiar smells will help calm him down.
Have got everything crossed, hopefully he'll get better again quickly and can come home in a few days.

Thanks all They let us take some of his things over, we took one of his beds, one of his toys then a box of his mints (he loves minty things lol) and some turkey for him to have if he was allowed to. Luckily he couldn't see us and he didn't hear us either, we heard him whine once but that was it. One of the nurses came and spoke to us, he's still got a bit of a temp and fast heart beat but they're not overly worried as they're probably due to stress. Obviously they're keeping an eye on both anyway. He wasn't on a drip and had been drinking fine. They've been giving him a little bit of water with electrolytes in every half an hour and he'd been keeping it down. When he brought it up last night and this morning the bowl had been left in with him so they think he just had too much in one go. She said he's been bright and looking up whenever they call his name, has been ready to get out when they've opened his door and he's looked ok when they've taken him into the yard. They were going to try him with some food around 6 and see how he goes, hopefully if he keeps it down and then carries on keeping it down he could come home in a few days. We're going to phone again in the morning and see how he is.

They didn't feed him last night as after they put his bed and toy in he became very quiet and they wanted to make sure he wasn't having another relapse. Don't know if it's his things that made him go quiet or not but she said he has calmed down since they gave him them. He's still bright and still hasn't needed to go back on the drip which is great. He's also still got a fast heart rate but the vet is more worried about the temp. It's still only a few degrees higher than it should be but it needs to come down. (yes the nurse did say they weren't overly worried but the vet is actually a bit concerned lol ) They're going to try him with some food soon, hopefully he'll keep it down and his temp will come down. We're going to phone again later and see what's happening.

I don't post on here a lot, but my heart went out to you while reading this thread and I wanted to add my condolences. For what it's worth, I'd like to add one of my favorite quotes regarding the loss of a family pet, especially a dog. I hope you can find some comfort in it, in time:
One last word of farewell, Dear Master and Mistress. Whenever you visit my grave, say to yourselves with regret but also with happiness in your hearts at the rememberance of my long happy life with you: "Here lies one who loved us and whom we loved." No matter how deep my sleep I shall hear you, and not all the power of death can keep my spirit from wagging a grateful tail. [excerpt from "The Last Will and Testament of an Extremely Distinguished Dog," by Eugene O'Neill]

Oh Sian! I just heard from Nat. I know there is nothing I can say to make you and your family feel any better, but I just wanted you to know I was thinking about ya girl. Its devastating losing a close family pet - especially in those circumstances. So.....my thoughts are with you and especially your Dad.
I'll be on MSN tonight if you want a chat, although i'm not always good at saying the right thing - but i can listen if you want to rant about how soo unfair life is! And it is.
Anjie,x.

Thank you everyone. Life is so ****ing unfair. They said it was to do with all the toxins that had built up. We wish we'd seen him yesterday but we know it would have really stressed him out when we'd have had to leave him. He's being cremated, he can still be in the house with us then. It's not how he should be with us but it's all we can do He was only 7. It isn't fair at all. R.I.P you big ox
