Thanks folks - you know, I didn't think I'd get that upset about it - as it's been a long time coming, she's been skin and bones for the last few weeks and it was getting to the stage where we were thinking about having her pts. But then this last few days she started putting weight back on, sniffles stopped, she looked like she'd turned a corner - and last night she was eager to come out for a cuddle and very active. This morning she was eating and grooming, then less than half an hour later she was dead. Edit - just had to tell the kids *sigh*

So sorry about Alice, but it sounds like she was surrounded by love, even at the end. Always reminds you how precious they are when you lose one. Thinking about you, Love Snakelady

Thanks ever so much for all the kind messages. It never gets easier. When we had the foster litter that Alice was one of, we had (including the babies) 31 rats. Over the last two years, we've gone down to (as of today) 7. I just wish they had a longer lifespan. Hubby said that if I want - once all have passed on, I can get another pair, but tbh, I'm not sure I could go through it all again. I've got Angel the really old gent (3 years and one month), who's virtually lost his back end and is probably heading to the vets for his final visit in the next month or so, then Millie with her internal bumps, and Angelina (Alice's sister) had a stroke recently, and is recovering really well but it's just so weird as I see them as the babies - and they're not any more. The remaining girls are currently tucking into bonio style dog treats (and making a real racket lol) but Ange has made a huge pile of bedding, as if she's digging trying to find Alice. They were inseperable (sisters), and whereas the others are ruled by their tummies, she's obviously quite distressed without her. I just hope she doesn't have another stroke or something Anyhoo, thank you again for the kind messages.
