I know snails live for about 5 years, but how do you knwo when they on their way to snail heaven? is it like the deep retraction syndrome?
i kniow it depressing but i just want to prepare myself for it cos my old boy Enzo gettin on in years now and i want to know what happens so i can make him and my others comfy in their old age.

hmm..i dont think they retract...i think they just die suddenly.

I thought the retraction was more due to an illness. I had one of mine go that way...right out of the blue, the other ones where fine.
If you've had the snails for so long, I'm sure you'd notice changes in the snails' behaviour. I asume that they would slow right down and perhaps change their eating habits before they died.

i had Enzo for a coupla years and he a year old when i got him. he still lookin quite healthy i just wanna know what to look for so's to make him comfy in his silver years love him!

I've read that snails in captivity can live to be 10, so it sounds like you have a long way to go with him. I've also read that one snail in captivity lived to be 30!! Maybe you can break that record with Enzo.
