I'm worried about my snail as he hasn't been retracting into his shell normally the past couple of days. I was really alarmed 2 nights ago to find that his mantle seemed to be very swollen. That seems to be okay now, but he still isn't retracting fully into his shell when sleeping. See these photos: cutesnaily.blogspot.com/He's been eating normally and has been pretty active, although I put him in a smaller container to try to limit his activity, it only seems to have made him more active. Any insights would be greatly appreciated! I'm worried

Looks perfectly normal to me!!...It's just his skin is darker where it's holding itself on to the lip of the shell......nothing to worry about..

hiya - I am so far from being an expert it's unreal but I have spent the last few days reading the forums here. That looks like a partial mantle collapse (your pics are really good) and there is a lot of info on the site about that - enter it into the search box. If it is that then it seems that sometimes snails are ok and recover so he may be ok too. They need to keep eating and they need ideal conditions re. humidity etc. There are other people on the site who are really knowledgeable and I'm sure they can give good advice. I hope everything goes well for you and your snail is better really soon.

Hiya - I'm sorry you are having to worry so much. The snailies are so sweet and it's horrible when they are unwell. I don't know what to suggest. I don't know how to keep him still or even if it makes any difference to do that. Thinking of you guys anyway:(

I don't think it's anything to worry about, it doesn't look that bloated at all.
When I had my Megalobulimus, the mantle constantly bulged out and the snail never went fully into the shell. I know it's a completely different species, but still I don't think this is a serious problem. And I don't see how putting the snail in a small container will help.
Maybe the snail has put on weight, or is carrying eggs?
keep us updated if there's any problems
and btw, it's a gorgeous snail, what species is it?
kind regards
Mike

It looks a lot like my milk snail. Both my milk snail and my aspersa have swollen-looking mantles, but they are both active and eating and doing all the usual snaily things and seem fine, so I haven't worried. I do keep an eye on them to make sure it doesn't progress, though. I don't know if it's possible for a snail to have a low-level inflammation of the mantle, not enough to be injurious, but enough to be slightly visible. That might be why they look the way they do.
BTW, my milk snail was a WC adult and looked like that right from the start.

I think lotsfofsnails is right, he looks just fine to me. My snails very rarely retreat completely into their shells unless conditions are not right for them, ie too cold or dry. Most spend their time sitting just in their shells like your pictures show or even further out! Mine often look slightly swollen if they have put on weight or are expecting eggs as lotsofsnails says.
