www.kokosgoldfish.com/I have 4 fancy goldfish of different breeds. They are full of character - definitely an underestimated aquarium fish.

I like the look of the fantail, would you say these are ok for beginners?

Absolutely yes you do. Have a careful read of the links provided in this thread and you will see why. Essential when you are setting up a new tank and also for the long term health of your goldfish, the test kit will show you any problems with the water quality of the tank and enable you to do something before the fish suffer.

I have a number of fancy goldfish, they are great characters! I have a white fantail (Aziraphale) and a black moor (Crowley) in one tank and in another an orange pearlscale (Sgt. Colon), a calico fantail (Nobby), a blue oranda (Detritus) and a chocolate ranchu (Dorfl). They are pretty easy and if you want something a bit cheaper/easier than a full water test kit, you can buy dipsticks that test most things you need to keep track of. (I also have a 300l tropical community tank full of assorted catfish and things. I seem to accumulate odd-looking pets )

if you ever get A Sachressa Commet katie, DON'T put them in with other goldfish as they are VERY agressive fish.

As a rule, it's best not to mix long-bodied goldfish (normal goldies, comets etc.) with round-bodied fancies, as they swim so much faster, odds are they will get to any food and eat it all before the poor fancies get a chance! They also need a lot of room to zoom about in. Comets are best with other comets, I think.

It should do fine in there! They are gorgeous , especially when they get bigger - the calicos can have such lovely random markings. The important thing is not to feed it just because it looks hungry - they will eat nonstop if you let them and can easily die of overeating! You can give them several small feedings a day however if you want to watch them eat often.

There are five-in-one kits (like the top item here www.fishandfins.co.uk/aquarium-test-kit.htm) that you can suggest to your fond mama if she'll only let you get one in future, of when you need to replace the current kits.

I've got quite a few second-hand tanks off eBay - I keep an ongoing search for any tanks for sale within about ten miles of where I live. Best bargain so far - 24"x15"x12" glass plus lid for... drumroll... 99p.

One reason I like glass tanks - this one was used to isolate a few synodontis catfish before, now it has fulicas in!

another good place is freecycle. if your mum would join you could place a tank and test kit ad on there.

Hah, good luck! My fantail and moor are only still when they're cuddling. (They're both male, but are both tireless in their efforts to persuade the other one to lay eggs. Trust me to get gay fish.)
