So i've pretty much set up my first snail tank, i have used potting compost as a substrate, which i baked for 2 hours, as said on the care guide of this website, i haven't got any snails yet, and then i was looking in and noticed these little white rock things in the soil, i looked at the bag i got it from and it said that this was perlite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perlite), the bag said that the perlite was to help water drainage, and my question is, could this perlite stuff be harmful to snails? Thanks in advance for any help!

Well after reading the link it seems to be a safe material for the snails, since it appears to be fully natural and without chemicals.

Phew...that's good to know, i get paranoid about most everything to do with animals, i keep fish too and so am aware of the difficulties that chemicals and anything unnatural can cause. anyway, now i can get on and order my snails! many thanks to everyone who replied.
