Oh dear. Well, he might of been really old and the stress of eggs just brought him to a low. Retics have a tendency to pass away after laying to, so it's not unknown. It tends to be the energy it takes to lay the eggs makes them tired, so they rest for a few days, but without eating ect they just go down hill. Terribly sorry for your loss, at least he left you a legacy.

Yes as mentioned snails can pass away when the have laid eggs. It is very common for Achatina reticulata (as mentioned), but can happen to any snail. It is normal for most snails to take a rest for a couple of days after laying, but sometimes they just don't wake up. It is an idea to try to build a snail up with high energy food such as sweet potato, and some soggy fish flakes, if you know it is carrying eggs. It's not guarenteed to protect against this kind of death but the theory is that the snail will have some energy reserves. some folk have noted that pleny of water in a dish helps too. (These tactics never saved my retics when they laid, but retics are notorious for dying). It's a sad thing to happen to your Tiger. Aw....

I have heard about H. aspersa when they lay loads of eggs so they might get "older faster" so that their organs can't sometimes handle fast paste of mating/laying eggs. Weaker snails will die that way that they get killed after laying eggs when body can't recover or get enough rest.
That's was one idea how here in my country young Helix species or other garden snails die so young age without any "good reason".
Then I heard that in my country many tigers die because of starvation people don't give right kind of food such huge snail. Too many here feed any type gals with vegetables that don't have enough nutritional value. Some say that "it's really hard to choose because shops have so much stuff in there.." I always say that try of course anything else than always same things better for snail too get some vary on diet.
